It Was Once My Universe』に収録された写真は、マリー・トマノヴァが8年以上ぶりにチェコの南モラヴィアにある実家の農場に帰省した際、2018年12月16日から2019年1月5日の間に制作されたものです。これほど長く故郷を離れていたのは、彼女の選択ではなかったが、戻ることはできませんでした。そして彼女にとって、離れていることは苦痛でした。
