During the first World War PERA (1903) was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat off Tripoli in 1917 whilst en route from Liverpool to Calcutta

The painting depicts what was most probably a fictitious meeting between the sailing warship HMS QUEEN and the 206-ton paddle-steamer WILLIAM FAWCETT which made the first Peninsular Steam sailing to Spain and Portugal in 1835
