A central glass is surrounded by a halo of enamel and natural seed pearls, which are original to the piece. As there is a small space between the opening "hatch" and the glass front, it can be filled with tiny gemstones to create a delicate shaker locket, or used to house a cherished memento. The enameling on the piece is worn in places and as the enameling is black, this was likely
